Saint Storms to Superb Stoppage!!

George 'The Saint' Groves was in scintillating form on Saturday night as he stopped unbeaten challenger Jamie Cox in the fourth round of his maiden WBA Super World title defence at Wembley Arena as part of the inaugural World Boxing Super Series.

Boxing in the quarter-finals of the new tournament, Groves showed just why he was named top seed as he produced a classy performance before landing a thunderous body shot that dropped and stopped the previously undefeated Cox.

A sharp Groves started fast with his excellent jab and soon found a home for his right hand, connecting several times in the opening round as Cox looked to close down the champion. Groves continued to land in the 2nd, following up right hands with neat left hooks over the southpaw lead. Cox boxed bravely though and managed to pressure Groves onto the ropes on a number of occasions but the Saint looked happy to let the Swindon man work, countering with his own shots, including some clever work to the body.

Cox started the fourth brightly landing a few jabs of his own but soon found himself in big trouble. Pressuring Groves onto the ropes, Cox looked to land his Southpaw left upstairs but Groves countered with his own backhand downstairs, landing a peach of a body shot right in the solar plexus. Cox dropped straight to the canvas and, doubled over, failed to beat the count - handing Groves his 20th career stoppage win and a place in the semi-finals.
A victorious Groves said afterwards, "I didn’t want an easy fight."

"I knew what he was about. I knew he'd ask me questions.

"I was landing big body shots on Jamie, in the end it was a right hook to the body, it's a crippling shot - I don't blame him for not getting up.

"I was in tremendous form going into the tournament, it's another good win.

"I came into this World Boxing Super Series as the No 1 seed, and I will go out as the winner."

Next up for Groves is a semi-final clash against another fellow Brit; Chris Eubank Jr. The pair squared off post-fight to tee up a mouthwatering clash for the start of next year.

"He's never boxed anyone like me," said Groves about his former sparring partner.

"We've shared the ring enough times, he knows what I'm all about."

Eubank Jr added: "It was a good fight, he did what he had to win, not too many cuts and bruises so it looks like we're on for January.

"Now we've got the super fight for the fans. That's what we wanted."

"I've been looking forward to this Eubank fight for a long time," said Groves.

"He's improved over the years but he hasn't boxed anyone on my level. I know if I boxed like I did tonight, he doesn't stand a chance."
